A Voice in the Wilderness

As nightfall does not come at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there's a twilight where everything remains seemingly unchanged, and it is in such twilight that we must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness. -- William O. Bush & Co

Good morning,

I fell asleep last night after taking in a few pages of Bob Woodward’s recent book, State of Denial. I am barely into the book and the picture Woodward paints of ex-secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld is an unflattering one. It describes him as a controlling, domineering man who seems to lack profoundly in social skills.

It is kind of odd but I never really gave much thought to it as I used to watch not only him but, the rest of this current Whitehouse administration’s public demeanor.

I think I figured it out – the American public doesn’t really want someone warm and fuzzy in the Whitehouse. The Bush Administration reflects America’s frustration with a changing world. White America is seeing its influence diminish and so, like a dying animal, the WASPS are looking to secure their dwindling influence by preying on people’s fears.

Unfortunately, as they have secured power and control, their misguided intentions have come to light. The neocons – for all their efforts to establish a status quo if sorts – have done nothing more than to polarize the country over issues which all hearken back to a more idyllic time in American History – a time which truly has never existed.

Consequently, appealing to the hillbilly with homophobic tendencies, Bush & Co. raged on about the one man-one woman marriage issue. – never mind that the divorce rate eclipses the number of marriages in this country. The stark reality that more people in this country are single and raising children stands squarely at odds with the idyllic push to deny a large sector of America’s citizens the right to assure that their loved ones – who happen to be of the same sex – will be protected and enjoy the same legal guarantees that their heterosexual counterparts do.

So, how does this happen? How can a country which doesn’t practice what it preaches have such rigidity when it comes to gay marriage? Why would they even give a damn about who’s hooking up with who?
